To fast or not: Ramadan takes on a new meaning amid the coronavirus pandemic
, a general practitioner and academic clinical fellow at the University of Oxford, explains that “there’s a lot of uncertainty in general around the virus, and we were getting a lot of requests from patients, clinicians and even from Muslim scholars who wanted to understand what are the [facts] around COVID-19 in relation to fasting.”
In addition, the BIMA compiled guidance, in collaboration with 60 subject experts, around fasting in the context of, such as cardiovascular diseases, organ transplants and diabetes. Here, Waqar notes that “certain conditions may have been considered [to be] low-risk outside of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now because of COVID, you’re actually a high risk patient.” An example here is diabetes, wheremore severe symptoms in some people living with diabetes, and so, caution is necessary.
“In the context of COVID-19, the main parameter that we are concerned about is dehydration [...] In non-fasting hours, [people] should be hydrating as much as they can,” says Waqar. Dehydration while fasting is expected as Muslims are not drinking any fluids between sunrise to sunset.that individuals can use when deciding to fast.
,” concludes Waqar. “In general, in the context of COVID-19, it is very important that we advise patients [and] say clearly that if you have got COVID-19 symptoms, you should have no [hesitation] in breaking your fast — especially if you have a high fever, a prolonged cough and malaise, then the decision is much clearer, and you should consider breaking the fast and completely hydrating.”
