Look outside the office to find your purpose inside the office
I once coached a finance professional named Jay, who loved his job but felt like he needed more—more challenge, more advancement, a deeper sense of mission. However, his group was small and the rest of the team was much more senior and not going anywhere, anytime soon. Jay thought the only way to move up was to move out, and he was upset about that because he genuinely wanted to stay.
Years later, Jay was still at that same company, in that same job, but happy and with no regrets. He challenged himself with an adjunct post at his alma mater. He satisfied his leadership bug by becoming president of the trade group in his specialty. He discovered his purpose as a teacher and mentor within the company and in the numerous roles he held outside it.

is one resource that connects professionals to substantive volunteer opportunities. Adding variety to your skill set will help you in your current role.Jay got more involved in mentoring staff, including people in other departments interested in his area of specialty. He also mentored university students and junior members of his trade group. Mentoring others is a different way of developing professionally.
