The French-speaking province could decide who leads the federal Liberals into the next election
If tradition holds, the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada will not be a native French-speaker from Quebec .
Were either Mr. Carney or Ms. Freeland to win the Liberal crown, all three major national party leaders would be non-Quebec anglophones. Despite the consonance of his name, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is an Alberta-raised anglophone and Ontario MP, while New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh represents a Vancouver-area riding.
“For the last five decades, only Quebec francophones have led the Liberals to parliamentary majorities and only one never did so,” University of British Columbia professor emeritus Richard Johnstonin a 2018 paper. “In the Darwinian world of party politics, choosing such leaders evidently carries survival value.”
Ms. Joly and Mr. Champagne are both known to be weighing a leadership run; each harbours deep ambitions to become prime minister some day. Their prospects got a boost with Dominic LeBlanc’s decision to take a pass on becoming a candidate this time around, leaving one less potential francophone rival in the race.
