Hope resident and conservation volunteer Kate Tairyan was surprised to see crews start trenching in a river just as salmon arrived.
The company’s work is occurring under terms of a Canadian Energy Regulator-approved work plan, with permits from the Fisheries Department, according to a statement from Trans Mountain.
“And without wasting any time, TMX just got their heavy machinery here and started doing the work,” she added. “Great care is taken to preserve the environmental features around the river,” according to a statement from the company, including “aquatic habitat provided within the riparian zone.” Tairyan said she is still surprised that DFO issued Trans Mountain a permit “to go into a river with spawning salmon.”
“Everyone is referring us to the TMX line no one picks up the phone,” Tairyan said. “My daughter was calling and leaving messages almost every day, it’s useless.”
