The leaders were stumped when asked about how they would make lettuce more affordable.
The floods in south-east Queensland have reduced lettuce supply, sending prices skyrocketing. And according to growers, higher wages and fertiliser costs will keep the cost of a head of iceberg lettuce above $5 for some time.
“What can you do to actually reduce the cost of lettuce and, even on a day like Mother’s Day, the cost of flowers?” she asked the leaders. But Tyson Cattle, national public affairs manager at AUSVEG, the peak industry group for the Australian vegetable and potato industries, said it was more than just floods driving lettuce prices higher., including higher prices for fertiliser, chemicals, pallets and timber, along with increasing wages, were feeding through to higher prices at the checkout.
