I have been intimately involved in the last three leadership races in the Liberal Party of Canada: 2003 , 2006 and 2013 , and I believe the party's national board needs to consider wrapping this one up early. Leadership races in the Liberal Party can be brutal affairs—nothing short of internecine warfare. The Jean Chrétien-Paul Martin wars dominated the party in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Much like in 2009, when there was a consensus that the political circumstances among the party establishment that there wasn’t time for a race—given what then-prime minister Stephen Harper was doing in the Commons, the growing Great Recession, and the government's minority status—perhaps running this contest out another month would be a mistake. Trump's 30-day clock is a far more clear and existential political threat. Consider the following: The membership list closed as of Jan. 27.
