The Tigers' Matt Vierling finished a 4-for-5 game with a mammoth, go-ahead home run.
HOUSTON, TEXAS - APRIL 03: Javier Baez #28 of the Detroit Tigers forces Alex Bregman #2 of the Houston Astros out at second and throws to first in the eleventh inning at Minute Maid Park on April 03, 2023 in Houston, Texas. Two swings seemed to awaken the Astros from their early-season slumber. Neither could deliver a victory. Yordan Alvarez and José Abreu attempted to carry Houston’s anemic offense on Monday night, only for a light-hitting Detroit outfielder to outdo them all.
Abreu could not reprise earlier heroics in the home-half. His weak flyout stranded the tying run at first base, sending the Astros to a 7-6 loss at Minute Maid Park. Houston stranded 12 baserunners. Alex Bregman, on second base only after Detroit could not turn a game-ending double play, scored to send the game into extras. Neither team scored during the 10th. Neris dispatched Detroit’s lineup in five pitches, prompting manager Dusty Baker to send him back for the 11th.
Detroit manager A.J. Hinch summoned José Cisnero, one of his few trusted leverage relievers, for the unenviable task of taming Alvarez with a game in the balance. Cisnero tossed a changeup in a 1-1 count. The pitch stayed flat.
