LOS ANGELES — Tiger Woods should be halfway home.
But for whatever reason, the 47-year-old ran out of gas at Riviera Country Club early on Friday afternoon.
Woods’ descent started at the par-3 sixth, where he landed his tee shot at the bottom edge of the massive green. Woods slammed his club back into his bag after seeing it land and stormed off to the players-only bathroom on the side of the tee box before playing partners Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas could even tee off. Woods then ended up putting into the bunker that sits in the middle of the green, which led him to an up-and-down bogey.
Woods had some incredible shots on Friday, mostly with his irons. He nearly aced No. 14, and left himself with a tap-in birdie putt, but that came on the heels of a pair of bogeys on his third and fourth holes of the day. Right after the near-hole-in-one, Woods completely chunked his approach and threw his club down in disgust. He still saved par on 15, and then missed a very makeable birdie putt at the 16th — which left him muttering, “f**k” under his breath as he walked off.
“I could have easily got off to a very hot start and I did not,” he said. “And then [in the] middle part of the round I could have turned it around a little bit, and I did not.”
