Not overjoyed with last year's numbers – even in light of it being a rebuilding year, and with some people still wary to travel because of COVID and other factors – the province of Nova Scotia announced towards the end of the 2022 season that it would be carrying out a broad, comprehensive socio-economic study on the value and impacts of the ferry service, which is something that has not been done before. This work is underway.
While the tourism sector across the province benefits from tourists being brought to Nova Scotia and the money they spend, the tourism industry in southwestern Nova Scotia, in particular, sees big benefits from the presence of the ferry. “The vessel overnights in Yarmouth and all her supplies including food, fuel, and vessel support services are from the region,” said Wilson, noting the crew’s overnight accommodations are local too.
