Gracious guests, maximum Maximo and an all-star celebration: Here are three things you need to know about the Blue Jays’ 6-5 loss to the Mariners in Seattle.
The Blue Jays handed Seattle at least two runs on Sunday, the difference in a one-run loss that closed out an ugly 1-6 road trip that dropped them into a tie for the final wild-card spot in the American League with the Mariners, just two games ahead of hard-charging Baltimore.
The Jays were up by a run in the sixth inning when Tim Mayza hit Carlos Santana and threw a wild pitch to move him to second. Santana went to third on an infield single off Mayza’s glove and scored on a Cal Raleigh sacrifice fly. After Bo Bichette homered to give the Jays the lead back in the seventh, J.P. Crawford led off the eighth with a sky-high pop-up that catcher Gabriel Moreno dropped in fair territory. Santana followed with a two-run homer, his second game-winning homer in as many games. Not to be overlooked in another disappointing loss was the performance of Max Castillo, making his first big-league start on just two days’ rest.
