All three owners were arrested and charged with public mischief after investigators determined there was evidence of a crime at BerMax Caffe and Bistro, just not one that was hate-fuelled.

What was first believed to be a possible anti-Semitic attack against a Jewish-owned cafe turns out to have been staged by the three owners of the Corydon Avenue restaurant, Winnipeg police say.

Carver said the restaurant had been targeted before. On Wednesday, Smyth couldn’t say with certainty if the owners carried out those crimes, too, but said there’s a probability they did.“I don’t believe the injuries were significant,” Smyth said. “We are shocked and deeply disturbed by today’s news,” the statement read. “It is deplorable that anyone would make false allegations of antisemitism, especially claims of such a serious nature, for any kind of gain.

“If the allegations of a fabrication of a hate crime are true, we condemn this in the strongest possible way,” said chief communications and media relations officer, Marty York. “False complaints of antisemitism are both illegal and harm the efforts of human rights organizations to combat racism, discrimination and hatred.”
