In another shocking sign of the toll the border crisis is taking on America, three agents with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) took their own lives, bringing the yearly total to 14.
Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Javier R. Fabela, 49, was part of an intelligence unit. “A United States Army veteran, SBPA Fabela loved serving his country, community, and this agency. But he loved his family even more. He enjoyed the outdoors, sports cars, the Dallas Cowboys and spending quality time with his loved ones,” said Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz.
The issue has led CBP to hire “Suicidologist” Dr. Kent Corso to help them. Although an individual’s decision to take their own life is a complex one with many factors from personal lives and various circumstances contributing, Corso is helping the agency understand and work to do their best to help prevent further suicides.
Corso has already traveled to Laredo, Texas, to meet with agents and plans to travel to the Rio Grande Valley to give a suicide prevention session, where two of the agent who committed suicide worked, according to the agents’ union. “Rocky made us all better, he will never be forgotten,” tweeted Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz about Roque “Rocky” Sarinana who was found dead on Nov. 6.Sarinana, a 22-year-veteran of the Border Patrol, pictured here with his wife and two kids. Fellow agents started a GoFundMe page to benefit his children’s college fund.“There is no higher priority for CBP than taking care of our people,” said a spokesperson for US Customs and Border Protection in a statement to The Post.
