The last of the fish that was reported to wash ashore Sunday were so deteriorated that they were shredded skeletons.

TEXAS — Thousands of dead fish washed up on the Texas coast this past weekend.

According to Quintana Beach County Park, swarms of dead fish flooded the shores of Bryan Beach near the mouth of the Brazos River. Bryan Beach is located just about six miles south of Quintana Beach.Pedestrians and visitors were encouraged to stay away from the beach until all the fish had been removed by park crews.

Texas Parks and Wildlife attributed the mass cause of death to low dissolved oxygen. After further investigation, the species most impacted was the Gulf menhaden fish. Parks and Wildlife said this kind of fish kill in the summer is common when temperatures increase. The low levels of oxygen happened due to a combination of factors including warm water, calm seas and cloudy skies.

In its final and most recent update on Facebook, Quintana Beach County Park on Sunday evening said the pedestrian beach was mostly cleared except for the fish that the machinery couldn’t reach. High tides over the next days should sift and bury them beneath the sand.If anyone sees a fish or wildlife kill or suspect a pollution event, they are encouraged to call 512-389-4848 or contact their regional Texas Parks and Wildlife Kills and Spills team biologist.
