More than one thousand runners laced up in Victoria to help raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society on Sunday, Oct. 6. Runners and walkers who have been impacted by breast cancer made their way around a one or five-kilometre loop at the University of Victoria.
For many participants, the event highlighted the importance of early detection and continued research for improving treatment options.
“The chance of surviving breast cancer has increased significantly in the last few years,” said volunteer lead, Negar Abedi. “But we are nowhere close to where we should be in terms of prevention and being able to diagnose breast cancer and catching it earlier and earlier.” In 2024, the Canadian Cancer Statistics expects to see 247, 100 new cancer diagnoses. Of those, nearly half are attributed to four top cancers: lung and bronchus cancer , breast cancer , prostate cancer and colorectal cancer .impacted by breast cancer,” according to the Canadian Cancer Society.
