Thousands come together to celebrate Eid-al-Adha in Blackburn's Corporation Park
The sun was fighting its way through the clouds as volunteers started to get ready for morning prayers in Blackburn.
Traditionally, prayers for Eid-ul-Adha take place in open air venues, meaning people can pray and celebrate the festival en masse, with families, friends and neighbours coming together. This was an important traditional aspect which brought the formation of Eid in the Park in the first place and why the days event happened in Corporation Park. The initial planned event at Blackburn Rovers was cancelled due to the volume of rain.
"These events are there to remind you to be mindful, helpful, contributory and aware of others - we need to accommodate everyone no matter who they are. We don't want people stuck in their homes, we encourage people to come out to events like these and that can make a difference to these individuals - it's our duty to help each other."
"I'm really happy with how today turned out and I hope people listen to the lecture. We can't really knock on people's doors and tell them what to do but I hope people do act upon what was said today. "We only started doing these types of events around eight years ago, where before it would usually be inside a Mosque, but having it outside where the whole Blackburn community can come together in one space is really heartwarming. It's also not just bringing people together but these events are also part of our tradition to have the Eid prayer outside."
