On a July afternoon last year, 22-year-old opera student Teddy Siegel was shopping around Times Square when she suddenlyhad to pee. She asked if she could use the bathroom at the store she was in, but they said no. Then she went to a nearby McDonald’s, where a security guard told her she needed to buy something in order to use the restroom. “The cheapest thing I could buy was a bottle of water for $2,” she remembers, “[but] I need my $2 a lot more than McDonald's does.
