Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said he wants to challenge the case in court.
, there were 606,000 undocumented people under the age of 16 in the United States as of 2019. During this same time period, 89% of undocumented children ages 3-17 were enrolled in public schools. Many live in states like Texas that are governed by lawmakers who might seek to prevent these students from attending public schools and withholding state funding from them.
Ana García Dorta, a student at the University of Houston and a prospective Temporary Protected Status holder, shared sentiments similar to Carrasco. “As immigrants, we brought nothing but clothes from my country,” she told. “Without that public education, I would not have gotten to do what I am right now.” Dorta is on a full ride at the university and says she is currently in the top 10% of her class.
