Raised in the Moreno Valley after her family emigrated from Thailand, Sarina Dahlan created a fictional world in the desert.

During the summer of 2022, in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Sarina Dahlan rewrote half of “Preset,” the prequel novel she had been working on for about three years.

In 2017, Dahlan quit her job of 16 years to become a full-time writer. She spent about a year working on “Reset” and then found an agent who quickly sold the book. “At that time, I wasn’t planning on ‘Reset’ being anything but a standalone,” she recalls. But Dahlan notes she had talked to her agent about two other possible books set in this world, one of which would be a prequel.

When Dahlan was 12, she moved with her family from Bangkok to Moreno Valley. It was a drastic change in scenery.
