Twelve bidders bid for the 103-card set, but only one paid $100,000.
A fan of the collectible Pokémon Trading Card Game reportedly paid more than $100 thousand for a little more than 100 cards. According to, the set of 103 cards was purchased over the weekend for $107,010 at Goldin Auctions. It's the most money that anyone has paid for Pokémon trading cards.
However, what makes this set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game rare is the condition it is in. Every card in the set are in perfect Gem Mint 10 condition. The original set of the Pokémon TCG were released in 1999, so to still be in perfect condition after 20 years is impressive.the key to the price was the Gem Mint condition, a metric that assesses the cards' corners, color consistency and gloss.
Amerman said that, since 2016, Pokémon card sets similar to this one have increased almost 10 times in value. So if you're lucky enough to have a full set, and they are in good condition, you may be sitting on a gold mine.
