Emmy’s decor is made up of both Kaplan’s personal collection, found at estate sales and thrift stores over the years, and gifts from customers . It all started 21 years ago, when Kaplan opened the restaurant in its tiny original space just a few blocks from where it is now on Mission Street. “Why does everything have to be so fancy?” Kaplan said. “At the time, it was like, collared shirts and ties and long white aprons. So that was something that I definitely was not interested in doing anymore.”
