The distant rock named LTT 9779 b is roughly five times the size of earth and may be the first of its kind we’ve ever seen.

There exists a scorched rock roughly 263 light years from Earth, where temperatures average 2,000 C during the day and showers of glass and titanium rain down from metal clouds.— may be the first exoplanet of its kind we’ve seen, the paper’s authors tell the Star. Based on previous knowledge, it also shouldn’t exist.Sunlike star LTT 9779

According to the paper’s first author Sergio Hoyer, of France’s Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory, LTT 9779 b is also the shiniest planet we know of. Its thick metallic clouds turn the exoplanet into a “mirror” in space, reflecting 80 per cent of all light from its sun. By comparison, Earth only reflects about 30 per cent of its sunlight.

LTT 9779 b lies right in the middle of what’s known as the “hot Neptune desert,” Günther explained — a hostile region where only gas giants known as “hot Jupiters” and smaller planets can survive.
