Q: Many of the problems students reported related to their research activities won’t, I imagine, come as a surprise to many readers. I’m curious what stands out to you. Did students tell you things you weren’t expecting?One thing that surprised us was that there was so little positive talk about research. Teaching seems to be the only vehicle for that. Students seemed to really look to their teaching for positive feedback and to value themselves as a contributing member of society.
Social support and isolation were also a problem. And that’s even more the case right now during the pandemic. Making sure that students are connected with social groups, both within their lab and within their graduate program, can be incredibly protective of their mental health. This may not be something that PIs initially think about as part of their job.
The final thing I try to do is to practice more of that positive reinforcement. And that’s not something that comes naturally to me; I’m the first person to point out a problem. I will say wonderful things about my grad students when I’m talking to other people, but I often forget to turn to them and tell them how highly I think of them. So that’s something I’ve definitely tried to practice more.
