Despite the fact that spring is officially here, Lake Michigan looks like a surreal frozen tundra as ice shards pile up along its shorelines.

captured the gorgeous natural phenomenon as ice shards piled up along the South Haven Pier in South Haven, Michigan, on March 19.

Despite its initial appearance, the ice shards are a result of Lake Michigan melting. As the frozen lake melts, the liquid water waves below the ice push broken pieces of ice against one another along the coastline. The stacked pattern of broken lake ice formed incredible patterns associated with the movement of waves below the ice.

As you can imagine, the array of ice shards are not stable and certainly not thick enough for anyone to stand on. The Coast Guard warned locals to not attempt to walk out on the ice as it is thin and prone to breaking apart.of the lake was frozen as temperatures reach negative 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the coldest temperatures this past year were during the polar vortex when low-pressure caused polar air to divert southward into the continental United States.

The extremely cold temperatures this past winter caused a large proportion of Lake Michigan and other Great Lakes to freeze over. Throughout winter people have been posting otherworldly photos of the lakes with giant ice formations and landscapes that look more akin to Antarctica than the upper Midwest.
