Joseph Altuzarra's glorious colorful coats are a new kind of heirloom.
I love coats. I have, well, too many of them, all of which are tweed, leather, wool, or silk. I'm not a parka person. I like technical clothing, but I've struggled to find a parka or puffer with panache.
Joseph Altuzarra may have just the answer. His collection, shown on Tuesday night, opened with gorgeous parkas covered in a blotty, painterly silk design that he said was based on Rorschach tests; each one was trimmed with a beasty collar. He used an exquisite mix of jewel tones and pastels in the prints, which looked sporty but super elegant, in both a long coat and cropped and cinched version.
Altuzarra seems to know their potential. The last five looks of his show revived the parka, showing them in embellished saffron satin with an emerald green velvet lining, and a pale mint opera coat with a chestnut hood. The finale was an earthy lavender gown with silver embroidery. Yowza! If you're headed to an outdoor party next winter, let one of these cape looks be your wardrobe.
