Remembering Harley: Graveside memorial service honours homeless Hantsport man’s life | SaltWireSYDNEY, N.S. — A letter sent to municipalities across Nova Scotia except for Cape Breton Regional Municipality has taken CBRM’s fight against the provincial municipal affairs department to a new level of frustration.

“I didn’t think any elected official who goes into these roles to help their community would be so punitive and malicious toward another order of government,” McDougall-Merrill told reporters after the meeting. Walsh said a colleague asked her on Monday what she thought of the letter, of which Walsh was not yet aware. Upon seeing it, she was “very upset.”

“Their comments are just unbelievable to me. I’ve never experienced that in all my years of municipal government.” Bill 340 was introduced last week, featuring amendments to four different acts. CBRM officials contest the bill will reduce its equalization funding — known as the municipal capacity grant — from $15 million to $13 million. McDougall-Merrill and councillors said it would force CBRM to increase taxes, already among the province’s highest.

“We don’t want the residents of CBRM to be disadvantaged as a result of CBRM’s indecision, so CBRM will be a part of the MOU.”Councillors came to the defence of Walsh upon the mention of the letter.
