When I found myself in Palm Springs last year with a sliver of free time, I did what any hungry, self-respecting tourist in search of a regional specialty should do: I asked a local for advice. That’s how I ended up getting a date shake at. I ordered off the letter-board menu at the old-timey candy shop, and a few minutes later I was in possession of a reassuringly hefty Styrofoam cup. Prize in hand, I commenced the seven-minute drive to the airport.
And that’s when it hit me: I’m drinking a milkshake. A date shake is a milkshake! It was thick, cold, and creamy, with tiny crystallized pieces of date that dissolved like maple sugar between my teeth. By the time I pulled into the rental car return lane, there was nothing but air in that cup. It was 10:20 a.m., and I had just finished the best date shake in America. Lesson learned: Listen to the locals.
