This data security startup just raised $15 million in Series A round led by Kleiner Perkins:

Cole says they launched Open Raven to tackle what they felt was the modern problem of data security: companies finding where their data is, and preventing data breaches.

Today the situation is dramatically different. Data stores and data lakes can pop up easily, and often without security engineers being aware of it. Much of the data is decentralized and various people within an organization have access to it , which often results with unknown exposures. The way Open Raven’s platform works is through integrating with existing infrastructure and its ability to automatically locate where data is being stored. The solution, which becomes commercially available this week, offers analysis of how data is protected through on-demand queries and real-time alerts. Open Raven also announced its Community Edition, which delivers real-time data leak supervision to detect data exposures prior to them becoming security threats.

Bucky Moore, partner at Kleiner Perkins, says that what caught his eye was the rich experience of the cofounders, as well as their approach in reimagining the overall security from the ground up.
