This Black History Month, let’s remember all our history | Opinion
When he was sworn in on the municipal court bench in 1966, Louis A. Bedford Jr. became the first black judge in Dallas County. His grandson, Louis A. Bedford IV, a civil rights attorney in Dallas, writes that we should remember the contributions of often-overlooked Black Americans this Black History Month.Loving one’s country means understanding its history and all the complexities that come with it; the stain of history as well as its shine.
We must tell the stories of the past to be remembered in the future. It is with this mindset that we embrace the notion that Black history certainly cannot be limited to the single month of February. This remembrance was originally known as Negro History Week, scheduled for the second week of February each year, coinciding with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
So we take this time to acknowledge and honor the contributions of Black people to our history, culture and society; to recognize the struggle and injustice faced by Black people in our country; and to right the wrongs of our past and celebrate our collective resilience. But what we sometimes fail to recognize is this: Black history is not its own separate entity. Its stories and lessons are intricately tied to our past, and its consequences inextricably tied to our future.
We are a country, with our power and influence all over the globe, that would not exist without the toils of slavery. And in our revolution to free ourselves of the tyranny and oppression of England, it was a free Black man — Crispus Attucks — who was the first casualty and martyr of that war.
