Oakland’s Luckyduck Bicycle Cafe, a coffee bar-meets-bicycle repair shop-meets-vegan deli near Lake Merritt, is closing for good. Its last day of operations will be March 31, according to a“There are a lot of reasons why it is happening, and we’re bummed but would rather focus on all the great stuff this place has given us,” wrote owner Aaron Wacks. “We are proud to have served Oakland and nurtured our community for as long as we could.
Originally opened in 2016, Luckyduck was as much a community space as it was a cafe and bike shop. The shop’s owners hosted punk shows and cycling-related workshops and talks, as well as organized group rides and campouts. They were intent on boosting bicycle ridership in the Bay Area through “Last fall, a burglary devastated the store financially.
Fans and friends of Luckyduck expressed their gratitude, said their thank-yous and bid adieu in the comment section of the Facebook farewell post. “You sold me the bike that made me really fall in love with bikes,” wrote one commenter. “I never would have guessed that I’d wind up working for a bike coalition and becoming an outspoken advocate for all my pals on two wheels.”
