Sali Hughes’s skincare line is here, and it’s good, says Vogue’s Jessica Diner. Really good.
Two years in the making, the six-product line-up is what Hughes considers to be a comprehensive and time-efficient approach to skincare that doesn’t compete with your existing routine, but rather is designed to complement it – whilst cutting through the misinformation around how many products we should be using at any given time.
“Really, I just think women are doing too much,” she says as we discuss the confidential launch over Zoom. “I think they’re doing too much in terms of their time, in terms of their lifestyle, and in terms of their skin. Whenever I would do events women would come up to me and say, ‘I’ve got this problem.’ I would always ask, ‘What are you doing? Walk me through your routine.’ And literally seven minutes later, I would have to stop them and say, this is too much.
And so, Hughes’s main objective was to simplify women’s routines. “[The rise of single ingredient skincare] has made women excessive with actives,” she says. “A skincare obsession is not the same as skincare knowledge. So what I wanted to do was massively demystify the whole process and just give people good, solid, stable actives. Just enough of what they need – and if they want to embellish on top, that’s fine. If they want to add a prescription, that’s fine.
She summarises: “You need a good ‘white T-shirt’ in your skincare routine – and then you can wear what you like on the top.”
