Despite President Trump’s early departure on Thursday from the second summit with North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, policy experts are optimistic that the two leaders will reconvene for a third summit.
Trump in his opinion was right not to rush into a deal with Kim which he said would “give legitimacy to a dangerous leader.”While there were high hopes that a more concrete resolution would be reached with North Korea, meaning the U.S. would loosen sanctions in exchange for increased denuclearization, Lee does not consider the meeting a failure.
Leading up to the summit, many policy experts anticipated that there would be some sort of agreement established between the two leaders. Given that a concrete agreement was not reached, Victor Cha, a senior adviser and Korea chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies , however said the meeting was a “total failure.”
“So in a way we are now stuck with a freeze-for-freeze, the very proposal that the most senior Trump officials in 2017 said was absolutely unacceptable and was insulting.” The President should be commended for his personal commitment to persuading Kim Jong Un to pursue a different path -- and for walking away when it became clear North Korea was not ready to commit enough to de-nuclearization.
