A man who sexually assaulted an acquaintance in 2020 has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, Lake County prosecutors said Tuesday.
He has been in the Lake County jail since then, held in lieu of $300,000 bond.At Monday’s sentencing, prosecutors asked for a lengthy sentence, arguing that Leyva was at high risk to reoffend if given a lighter term. They also said Leyva had not accepted responsibility for his actions against the victim.
“This offender will spend a significant amount of time in custody because of the bravery of the survivor, the investigation by the sheriff’s department, and the hard work of our prosecutors and victim specialists,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in a statement released Tuesday.Advertisement
