HALIFAX, N.S. — After a bit of a pivot because of the pandemic, the 7th Annual Halifax Black Film Festival will be back in person and online this year. The event is a chance to celebrate African Heritage Month by amplifying Black voices and uplifting Black talent from February 24 - 28, 2023. It was created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation and will present 70 films from 10 countries virtually and in-person at Cineplex Park Lane and events at the Halifax Public Library.
We hire mentors, the top in the business to accompany them and to teach them and to train them. And while they're doing their first film and after that, these entries, they go on to all the Black festivals and beyond the Black film festivals to be screened too.
A She's a girl from Nigeria and then going to Ireland to seek asylum, and then she will be confronted with all the bureaucracy and all the problems, like the asylum seekers usually have when they coming from the south. And it's a beautiful and touching film, it's coming from a good place. And we believe those are the conversation we need to have. It's very uplifting.
But we also want this festival to be a great forum, as you mentioned, where we can discuss all the challenges the industry is facing. All the challenges and opportunities as well. Like it's not just about the challenges we need to acknowledge them and work towards solutions, but we also need to say, hey, there are some more opportunities here on the table.
