Gil Dares recalls driving around the Town of Yarmouth one evening and seeing deer in 22 different locations. | SaltWire

“This survey will help us better determine how the community feels about the deer population,” said Dares. “We obviously know there are issues ... But we’ve heard a variety of different opinions on the matter. The goal of this survey is to actively engage with the community to gain better insight as we work toward developing a management strategy.”

The working group is made up of two councillors, three members of the public, representatives from the Department of Natural Resources and Renewals and town staff.“That’s been made perfectly clear to us by the department,” he said. “We have to first establish a method of determining the size of the urban herd.”

In Truro, one of the things done there to help manage the deer population has been a controlled cull with cap limits. In their first managed crossbow hunt, 14 deer were killed.. The deer meat was donated to Feed Nova Scotia, with some of it also going to the Millbrook First Nation, which was involved in the cull.

“I can tell you that I’ve been doing that myself and there are very few areas in town where you don’t see deer,” he said.Read moreCoun. Wade Cleveland, who is part of the working group, said they’re even exploring research into contraceptives and sterilization, which has been done in areas out west. He was going to be speaking with a biologist at Dalhousie University who specializes in contraceptives within wildlife.
