With the return of in-person graduations, high school students reflect on the turmoil of the past two-and-a-half years and look with hope to the future.

At various times over the past year, Grade 12 Toronto student Cici Zhan wondered if she’d get the chance to don a cap and gown and receive her high school diploma, while cheered on by friends, family and teachers.“I really loved it,” said Zhan, 17, who attends St. Joseph’s College School, a girls’ Catholic high school located on Wellesley Street West, near Bay Street. “While walking up , I felt really emotional.

This year’s grads were in Grade 10 when the pandemic hit, so they’ve only had one normal year of high school. But many told the Star the easing of restrictions over the past year, the resumption of extracurriculars, and the return to a normal semester, helped them feel like they were ending on a positive note.

Fiorella Vargas, 17, said when school shut at the start of the pandemic, some students were initially excited because they assumed they’d get a break and return in a couple of weeks. “After a while, we missed the structure of a routine.” “I wanted to at least have a photo of an actual graduation, like a memory. Because I wasn’t really present for high school because everything was kind of taken away due to the pandemic.”

“They were robbed of the high school experience,” said Patejczuk. “It’s so important for them to be together, and laugh together, and talk and share their problems.” Since COVID restrictions lifted, Umadac said she’s gotten “a lot more excited” about going to York University, and being on campus, attending in-person lectures and participating in extracurriculars.
