Climate experts say long-term data is required to determine the link between the recent flooding in the Western Cape and climate change.
The province experienced torrential rains and storms that killed at least eight people and damaged infrastructure.
"The weather system itself is not unusual, but it is associated with strong winds, high rainfall and, as a result, flooding. These weather systems are usual, and one weather system itself does not tell us about climate change. The Western Cape government estimates that the recent floods caused nearly R1.4 billion in damages to the agricultural sector.Neville Sweijd, director of the Alliance for Collaboration on Climate and Earth Systems Science and senior researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research expressed a similar view.
