Students who are accepted into Shopify’s Dev Degree program work and attend university simultaneously for four years, earning both a salary and a degree while their tuition is paid. Meet one of the first students from York University to finish.
Graduating without debt is only a dream for many Canadian university students, but for GTA resident Paarth Madan it’s a happy reality.
The program expanded to York in 2018 and has recently forged a partnership to offer the degree remotely through Dominican University in California. To date, 42 students at Carleton and York have completed the program, which accepts 10-15 students a year from each university. The cohort comprises 50 per cent women, and there is a conscious effort to forge partnerships that help the company “build a diverse pipeline.
“This gives the students an opportunity to explore different disciplines to get a bit of breadth and context on the whole environment,” said Evans Adnani. “You get a different type of exposure when you’re working with a team long term,” Madan said. “Onboarding and gaining context take time, but after eight months or a year with Dev Degree, you can make a meaningful contribution. The support system is unique, too; we can get support on both ends and can tap into those resources.”
