“When I dropped them for the auction, I said with such certainty that this will be the most expensive sneaker ever sold,” Jordan Geller, the seller, told. “It wasn’t fluff. This was a once-in a lifetime opportunity, around the anniversary of the moon landing, and at Sotheby’s, and I’m so happy how it all went and proud to have been a part of it all.”
That dozen was handed out to runners at the 1972 Olympic Trials, and over the years, the shoes lived various lives on tracks and roads. Only one pair—Geller’s pair—was never worn or even tried on.The shoes went up for auction on July 11 at Sotheby’s New York auction house alongside 99 other pairs of famous kicks from the past. Bids for the first-edition Nike Moon shoes started at $80,000, and they were expected to bring in about $160,000.
“This seemed like a great deal for everyone, but with the Moon Shoe, there was no telling where they would end up,” Geller said. “My opinion was that any estimate was a number pulled out of the sky, and I felt that I wanted to let the market decide what they’re worth. It was a risk, but I didn’t want to pull the plug five days early. I felt like I’d live to regret not seeing their way to the finish line.
