Ava Greencorn, a Grade 5 student from Summerside, P.E.I., opened her business,The 10-year-old – 10-and-three-quarters, to be exact – sells more than 20 different flavours of cotton candy and fresh kettle corn.

“Once I got my machines and supplies, my mom had to take a food safety course, then get two different food licenses with P.E.I. One was to produce products at home and sell on-site, the other was to produce my products on-site.”The young business owner faced a variety of challenges, but it was nothing she couldn’t handle.

“I love having my own spending money and seeing smiles on other people’s faces and having joy inside when they are eating my sweet and salty treats.” After graduating high school, she took a year off to figure out what she wanted to do as a career. She opted to take a photography program at Holland College.

“One thing about this job is that I never really had an official opening, I just used social media to help promote my material and tried to market myself the best I could," she says. While she did take photography bookings while still in college, she was still getting a lot of support from classmates and instructors at that point.

“I’m just so happy that there’s always room to learn something new and improve because that’s why I’m where I’m at today.”A challenge Evison hadn’t anticipated was the negative power of comparison.
