While Soli maintains that the lack of accurate information about LGBTQ people in her school’s curriculum can make being out at school difficult, the friends she made at school make these challenges worth it. “Being out is owning yourself and walking with your head up. There [are] a lot of expectations that trans men can’t be feminine. I don’t believe in the box the binary puts many people in," JP says. "I go to a predominately white school, so when we take into account intersectionality, we shouldn’t ignore the fact I am cis passing and that I don’t have white privilege. When I’m in spaces with other trans people, there is this limiting factor—I can’t relate to all these white people.

Many LGBTQ students report that a support system or an ally—whether a family member, friend, teacher or guidance counselor—is often invaluable in helping them navigate their school, especially given the negative impacts LGBTQ students can experience.2017 National School Climate Survey
