A new generation of electric boats is making waves -- this Swedish startup says its fully electric, zero-carbon hydrofoils can cut emissions while slashing journey times, by 'flying' above the water.
Inhabitants of the Swedish capital, an archipelago of 14 islands connected by 57 bridges, have a long history of using watercraft to get around. With an estimated fleet of 756,000 leisure craft, Sweden's recreational boating sector is one of the largest in the world per capita. But that comes with a big environmental cost.
"The three largest producers are going to be the container ships, the bulk cargo, and then the tankers. Personal craft is usually the smallest," says Elise Georgeff, a researcher at the International Council on Clean Transportation.
