One in 10 New Jersey workers is in the healthcare industry.More than 100,000 additional residents are employed in the healthcare and social services sector than in the second largest industry, retail trade, which employs just over 498,000 residents.
Overall, New Jersey’s workforce grew between 2010 and 2021, with an additional 364,642 workers joining the civilian workforce, according to the latest Census data., quarrying, and oil and gas extraction — saw the largest increase in workers, with the workforce more than doubling in the past 11 years.
Seven industries shrunk in the past decade, with accommodation and food services seeing a 12.7% decline, the largest decline of the 20 industries listed by Census data. It’s unclear if the decline in accommodation and food services employment is a temporary one caused by the pandemic’s impact on restaurants and hotels, or a more permanent reduction.
