Dave Poulin: These ’20s might not be roaring, but they sure are high-scoring in the NHL
Respecting that the word “roaring” was claimed as a descriptor for the ’20s of an earlier century, I’ve chosen “high-flying” to define the recent flashback we’ve seen in high-scoring games in theOn an off night earlier this week, in my usual routine of surfing through games, I stumbled upon a 6-0 first-period score coming out of Columbus. Buffalo’s emerging star,, had already netted four goals, and was threatening every record standing.
No lead is safe, and everyone knows that. The old joke in the locker room referred to a two-goal advantage as the “worst lead in hockey.” Of course, the team that was down two was the team making that claim. But there is truth in the statement. Up by two, do you play more conservatively to protect that lead and essentially invite your opponent back in the game, or go pedal to the metal and take whatever risk necessary to increase the lead? The answer lies somewhere in between.
The goaltending fraternity isn’t as strong. There are always a handful of standouts, but right now that hand is smaller. Last year’s top trio on the Vezina list — the Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin, Calgary’s Jacöb Markstrom and Nashville’s Juuse Saros — haven’t found those same games this season. But Connor Hellebuyck is back on top of his game with the surging Jets, Jake Oettinger is a rising star in Dallas, and Boston’s duo of Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman have elevated the Bruins.
