MPs voted 295 to 221 to give the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill a second reading, clearing the way for it to undergo detailed scrutiny in the coming weeks. Mrs May led a chorus of senior Conservative rebels who savaged Downing Street’s plans to override parts of theThe Bill would allow ministers to change the part of treaty that introduced post-Brexit checks on goods sent from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
But the argument was systematically pulled apart by Mrs May, who insisted the Bill would not achieve the Government’s stated aims and added the confidence vote in Mr Johnson’s leadership may have damaged his negotiating position.she said: “As a patriot, I would not want to do anything that would diminish this country in the eyes of the world., it will not achieve its aims, and it will diminish the standing of the United Kingdom in the eyes of the world, and I cannot support it.
