But Trenton will think of some anyway.

Not only is nursing home care for New Jersey Medicaid beneficiaries lousy, it’s also incredibly expensive. In just the past year the state, meaning you and I, has paid more than $100 million to care for just 1,500 patients. That’s a crazy number. At that price you would expect the level of care to be first-class, cutting-edge medical care. But according to the state, the care these vulnerable patients are receiving is substandard at best and possibly criminally negligent at worst.

None of this is new information, the last comptroller report from a year ago looked alarmingly like this one and in that time Trenton has done almost nothing to improve the situation. For-profit nursing homes are allowed to operate with shocking levels of substandard care for years with little to no consequences.

Sure, the house of horrors that wasgot shut down but there are plenty more homes on the list of repeat offenders that continue to cash Medicaid checks.

There’s a bill waiting for a vote that would force transparency from nursing care providers allowing the state a real look at the inner workings. If they don’t comply, an escalating series of penalties could see the Medicaid money faucet turned off. The nursing home industry has pushed back and the bill, authored over a year ago, still hasn’t received a vote. Gross. Grow a spine, pass the bill and start running some of these ghouls out of business.
