Brian Linds’ joy and self-acceptance reverberate throughout Reverberations
Tickets & Info: $15-$28 at phtheatre.org
The audience is divided into four groups, each rotating through four scenes staged in different rooms of the century-old building that houses North Vancouver’s Presentation House Theatre. A fifth scene brings the entire audience back together in the theatre proper, where we see Linds for the first time.
All the while, actor Victor Mariano impressionistically mimes the narrative with a precise, restrained physicality. Oddly interesting to watch, the live action adds little to our understanding of the stories being told. This scene might work almost as well on radio. The most compelling sequences concern Brian’s mother. A Beckett-style monologue, “We Thought You Were with Us,” shows her in a confused early stage of Alzheimer’s, holding this strange object, a telephone. In a series of short, repetitive sentences, a female narrator takes us inside her head: “She thinks, what am I supposed to do with this?” Jan Wood’s carefully contained performance fleshes out the woman’s fear and denial.
