This summer, the owners behind The Yard on 3rd are aiming to turn a piece of downtown Willoughby into a backyard party: The social area will have food trucks, Geraci’s pizza and outdoor and indoor bars.
Businesswoman Anna Dey is a co-owner behind the venture, which will be located in the space formerly occupied by Lure Bistro on 3rd St. Lure closed in January 2020, right before the coronavirus pandemic shutdown and after 20 years in business.“The Yard is going to be primarily an outdoor venue,” she said. “We plan to run St. Pats Day to Halloween as a general time frame; however, our sublease tenant, Geraci’s, is year-round.
The picnic area will be a communal space for people eating lunch and dinner from the food trucks, pizza from Geraci’s or having a drink. Dey said the goal is to create an “outdoor aesthetic” complete with games, music, string lights, flowers and natural elements.A big aluminum gate will open to picnic seating and the outdoor bar, with the building behind it.
One probable focus is a “slice shop,” where individual slices are sold for a quick bite. While the fast-casual pizza-slice concept is not seen much throughout Cleveland, it’s been popular in New York’s boroughs for decades. Slice-shop eateries usually cook several types of whole pizzas. You choose cheese only or one made with a topping you want, and that slice is crisped up in an oven. Often there is a small counter, or grab and go.
“We’ll do our own little twist on it. We want to give people a little bit of variety, but we’ll always be doing Geraci’s pizza,” he said.
