Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East are speeding past the U.S.

When it comes to high-speed trains, China's rail system is in a class by itself, according to the Railway Gazette International's latest . The bi-annual study ranked the average speeds of scheduled weekday high-speed services between May and June 2019.

China's fastest trains, the G17 and G39 trains between Beijing and Nanjing, reached a top speed of 317.7 kph during the test period, slightly below their maximum speed of 350 kph . For comparison, that's about twice as fast as Amtrak's Acela. But this data point doesn't begin to capture China's complete domination of the world's high-speed rail race. Not only does China have the fastest train, it hasthe fastest trains and it is constantly adding more. Remarkably, the fastest train in the journal's 2017 survey was the G403 between Shijiazhuang and Zhengzhou, which clocks in at 283.4 kph and is no longer even in the Chinese top 10.

At least a dozen Chinese trains are faster than the no. 2 nation's speediest train. That second spot belongs to Italy's Italo 9955, which reached a speed of 272.4 kph between Milan and Reggio-Emilia. This was enough to overtake France's TGV, which hit a top speed of 271.8 kph between Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine. Two notable entries in this year's survey are Morocco and Saudi Arabia, following the opening of high-speed lines in both countries.
