As part of Women's History Month, women of MotorTrend are telling their personal stories. Here's Kristen Lee's.
As part of Women's History Month, each week you'll hear from one of the women who tellSomeone recently asked me how long I've been writing about cars professionally; I surprised myself when I realized it's been 10 years. That went by fast! As part of this year's Women's History Month series at, I thought I'd tell you how I got into this business and, looking back, what lessons I picked up along the way that help me on the daily.
Unfortunately, Boston, as fun a college town as it is, didn't have the kind of automotive hub I wanted to break into, so I transferred to the University of Southern California for my junior and senior years. I figured its proximity to the famedcould only help me on my journey. During that time, I kept my eyes and ears open for any and all opportunities. I started my own online blog to keep my writing sharp and to have a ready body of work to show an editor when necessary.
I moved back home to Jersey and took a position at a PR agency that also had automotive accounts in order to stay close to the industry. The job was miserable. Some of my colleagues were nasty and the whole thing felt like I'd failed at Plan A. After six months, I quit the PR job cold turkey and thought I'd strike out on my own as a freelance writer.opened up at the same time. I resorted back to my tried-and-true method: Being annoying via email.
