Corneliu Porumboiu's take on film noir is droll, often confusing, and completely captivating
‘You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?” Lauren Bacall asks Humphrey Bogart seductively in “To Have and Have Not,” then adds, helpfully, “You just put your lips together and blow.” Whistling isn’t so simple in “The Whistlers.
” Nothing is simple in Corneliu Porumboiu’s deliciously droll though often confusing take on film noir in which a disillusioned narcotics detective in Bucharest must learn a secret whistling language. You just crook your index finger in your mouth, rest it on top of your tongue and blow hard enough for your words and sentences to be heard across mountain ranges or urban expanses.
